Choosing the Right Fire Extinguisher Your choice of fire extinguisher will depend upon: Type of fire likely to occur H3R clean agent extinguishers are effective on A (common combustibles) B (electrical) and C (flammable liquids) class fires (although not all models carry an “A” rating). Size and weight limitations Halon fire extinguishers are lighter and more compact than equivalently rated Halon alternative and C02 extinguishers. Local regulations Regulations regarding the size, type and quantity of portable fire extinguishers vary by state, so it pays to check local fire codes. Fire codes typically call for primary extinguishers with a minimum rating of 2A:10B:C, and secondary extinguishers of a lesser rating. It is usually possible to satisfy "A" rating requirements with inexpensive dry chemical extinguishers, while deploying clean agent extinguishers to protect sensitive equipment or other assets susceptible to damage. Halon vs. Halotron Halotron 1TM is an EPA-approved alternative to Halon, and is for non-residential use only. While Halotron has the clean agent benefits of Halon and is less damaging to the ozone layer, Halotron models are more expensive, larger and heavier than like-rated Halon extinguishers. Always compare extinguisher size and weight vs. the UL rating. |
